Rob Ferguson, Founder & Advisor with Ferguson Alliance, Interviewed on the Influential Entrepreneurs Podcast Discussing Family Business Exit Planning

Published on December 9, 2022

Rob Ferguson discusses family businesses’ challenges and solutions.

Listen to the interview on the Business Innovators Radio Network:

Family businesses often have to grapple with the delicate balance of family dynamics and professional structures. This is because, in most family businesses, there is a mix of family members employed as employees and shareholders. This means that their familial relationship must not interfere with their business relationship. However, it can be difficult for families to separate these two elements and maintain a healthy work environment.

Another challenge for family businesses is succession planning. As founders age or retire, they must ensure that their company has a solid and competent leadership team before leaving. This requires careful planning and consideration of the skillsets needed by future leaders, as well as finding suitable candidates within the family. It may also require non-family members to be employed in leadership roles.

Family businesses also have to contend with the risk of ‘entrepreneurial drift’ when family members become too focused on their interests rather than the business’s long-term health. This can lead to a lack of oversight and poor decision-making, ultimately hurting the company financially.

Overall, running a family business involves navigating complex challenges that other companies may not encounter as frequently. It requires careful planning and consideration of familial dynamics and professional structures. However, with proper management, these challenging elements can be addressed successfully for the business’s future success.

Rob explained: “Family businesses often struggle with communication issues between family members and employees. In most family businesses, effective communication is key to creating a successful working environment. This means that all family members must be aware of their roles within the business and must make sure that everyone has access to the same information. It is also important for family members to make sure that any decisions made are seen as fair by both employees and other family members. Failing to manage communication issues can lead to mistrust, resentment, and a breakdown in relationships between employees and owners, which can have long-term repercussions on the company’s success. Taking steps to ensure open dialogue between all stakeholders can help address these potential issues before they become problematic.”

Despite the challenges that face a family business, with proper management and communication, these companies can strive for success. Taking steps to foster an atmosphere of trust and respect within the organization will help strengthen familial and professional relationships, which are essential for any successful family business. By being aware of potential issues such as entrepreneurial drift or communication problems between family members and employees, owners can ensure that their company is well-positioned for future growth and long-term success.

Alison Moss Comstock, with Comstock Partners, says: “Rob’s your guy if you have a family in conflict and you want to save the business. He can quickly get to the root cause of disruption in a family-owned business. He brings focus to what should be driving decision-making – often with his very first question: do you want to be a business first family or a family first business? Rob is even-keeled when things get tough, or a situation is difficult. He always has the client’s best interests at heart, and he offers a calm and comforting presence. This work is personal to Rob, you’re not just a transaction, the relationship matters to him.”

Amelia Island Microgreens Teen Connor Hiebel Awarded FedEx Entrepreneur Fund Grant For Empowering People

Published on December 7, 2022

Amelia Island Microgreens was selected as one of 30 entrepreneurs to receive a $10,000 grant through the 2022 FedEx® Entrepreneur Fund, presented by FedEx and HelloAlice.com in collaboration with GenHQ.

“We believe everyone should have access to clean, nutrient-rich, and economical food,” says teen entrepreneur, Connor Hiebel.

Amelia Island Microgreens was selected as one of 30 entrepreneurs to receive a $10,000 grant through the 2022 FedEx® Entrepreneur Fund, presented by FedEx and HelloAlice.com in collaboration with GenHQ.

The program provides grants to small businesses owned by military-connected entrepreneurs or small business owners with disabilities.

“Covid made 2020 a challenging year, changing how we look at many things, said Christine Heibel, Connor Heibel’s business partner, and mother.

“For many of us, food security became an issue,” said Christina Hiebel.

“To meet this and his own personal health challenges, Connor started Amelia Island Microgreens and developed a selection of ‘Ready, Set, Grow!’ kits for people to grow microgreens for themselves and their pets.”

Connor and his business partner/mother Christine are currently on a media tour educating the public about microgreens. Listen to their recent appearance on Optimal Health Radio with Dr. Tami Patzer.

Amelia Island Microgreens is a mother/son-owned business born out of necessity to address Connor’s complex health challenges.

“Connor was born as a failure-to-thrive child, yet has created a thriving life (although challenging) through good nutritional and mental practices,” explained Christine.

Due to his health, Connor has not been able to attend public school for more than 50% of his school years. He has fluctuated between being medical homebound and homeschooled to fulfill his educational requirements.

“Growing a business has been an amazing educational experience with real-world lessons,” he said.

Having grown microgreens for more than a decade, Connor considers microgreens part of his medicine.

“Microgreens are the most nutritious stage in the life-cycle of a plant, delivering up to 40% more nutritional density than the mature plant,” said Connor.

“Microgreens are eaten live, not weeks or months after they have been harvested, providing enzymes not present in ‘dead’ food.”

Connor has always had an entrepreneurial spirit. At age four he sold a rock to a man (with lessons of supply and demand from his embarrassed mother). He purchased his first lizard at age 6 with money he made from making and selling soy candles.

At the peak of Covid, people around the world all experienced ‘less than desirable’ produce. To help people gain food security, Connor decided to take action to educate and empower people to grow nutrient-rich microgreens. In less than two years, Amelia Island Microgreens has a distribution of more than 4,000 ‘Ready, Set, Grow!’ trays in circulation.

The FedEx Fund will help Amelia Island Microgreens remove single-use plastic from their kits, aligning with their mission to empower people to achieve a healthier lifestyle. The Fund had more than 12,500 applicants. Amelia Island Microgreens was one of 30 applicants chosen.

“We believe every person deserves the opportunity to grow their own food, no matter their physical capabilities, age, or economical situation,” said Connor.

“We believe every family deserves food they can trust. We believe every child deserves to have the confidence to grow their own food and understand food does not come from a store.”

Amelia Island Microgreens kits are available online and local Florida retail stores: Coastal Cottage, Nassau Health Foods, and Redbones Dog Bakery. See Amelia Island Microgreens on Facebook, too.

Heidi Sharman announces upcoming book, “Intuitive Goddess”

Published on December 7, 2022

Heidi Sharman, owner of Heidi Sharman Holistic Health & Wellness releases book to help women to manifest great health and harness their feminine energy to build their dream lives.

Intuitive Goddess is the 2nd in the Goddess series by The London Publishing House. It features inspirational women who are sharing their real-life stories of how they listened to their call into greatness and wrote their own realities; manifesting their love, health and success, and harnessing their feminine power to build lives far beyond their dreams.

Having experienced the loss of her health, mobility and independence due to a devastating injury,  Heidi found a way of healing and recovering physically and emotionally and now she helps other women take charge of their health, lose weight, restore balance,  and reconnect with their unique identities.

In 2017, Heidi was bouldering when she fell and broke her heel requiring surgery, a lengthy recovery and rehabilitation. Previous to this, when not working as a Card Brand Specialist she was incredibly active, spending most of her time running, climbing, taking part in outdoor activities and coordinating the busy lives of her 2 children.

Suddenly unable to walk, do physical activities or manage her household,  she struggled, not only physically, but emotionally and the Consequences of her injury extended beyond the home when she missed a critical transition time at work, preventing her from taking on a new role within the organization.

When damage from the injury persisted, Heidi was offered a 2nd operation that would help with the immense pain she was suffering from but the downside was that she would further lose mobility. She turned down the operation and switched her focus to her own nutrition.

She made changes that included cutting gluten, sugar and dairy and within one month had stopped taking pain medication and she could walk, do outdoor activities and be active with her family once again. Today, Heidi has resumed hiking, enjoys long walks at the beach and has even gone back to climbing,

Heidi says:  “Our bodies, are a reflection of our physical and emotional well-being.

Taking the time to listen and honor what they are asking for, creates the space for healing that you didn’t realize was possible.”

Intuitive Goddess will be released on 11th January 2023 and will be available on Amazon KDP and the Lulu bookstore.
